New York Mafia boss Joseph Bonanno’s 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun was referred to in Italy as a “lupara” or “lupa.” It originally was used by Sicilian sheepherders for shooting wolves and other predators. It became a favorite weapon of Sicilian Mafiosi because it could be concealed under a jacket.
