May 26, 1950

The first hearings of the Kefauver Committee are held in Miami, and testimony establishes that large-scale illegal gambling is occurring in the state.

May 3, 1950

The five-member U.S. Senate Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce, led by U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, popularly known at the Kefauver Committee, is established.

The Desert Inn Hotel, run by former Cleveland Mob boss Moe Dalitz, opens in Las Vegas.

 

June 20, 1947

Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel is killed at the Beverly Hills, California, home of girlfriend Virginia Hill.

January 25, 1947

Al Capone, his mental and physical health destroyed by syphilis, dies in Palm Island, Florida.

 

December 26, 1946

The Flamingo Hotel, run by mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, opens in Las Vegas.
