October 25, 1957
Mob boss Albert Anastasia is killed in a New York City barber shop in a murder planned by rival mobster Vito Genovese and Anastasia’s underboss, Carlo Gambino. Gambino takes over leadership of Anastasia’s crime family.
January 30, 1957
The U.S. Senate establishes the Select Committee on Improper Activities in Labor and Management, popularly known as the McClellan Committee after its chairman, Senator John McClellan of Arkansas. Committee testimony establishes clear links between organized labor and organized crime.
December 15, 1953
Las Vegas casino operator Benny Binion, the former boss of illegal gambling rackets in Dallas, is sentenced to five years in prison for tax evasion.
August 31, 1951
The final report of the Kefauver Committee is released, establishing that organized crime is present in large and small cities across the United States, often with the protection of corrupt elected officials and law enforcement.
November 15, 1950
The Kefauver Committee meets in Las Vegas in the federal courthouse that today houses The Mob Museum.
