Gambino crime family boss Paul Castellano and his underboss, Thomas Bilotti, are killed outside a Manhattan steakhouse by an assassin led by John Gotti, who inherits leadership of the crime family.

January 15, 1983

Meyer Lansky, financial genius behind the national crime syndicate, dies of natural causes in Miami Beach, Florida.

Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, who oversaw the Stardust casino skim for the Chicago Outfit, survives a car bombing in a Las Vegas restaurant parking lot.

July 4, 1981

Six of the 10 known members of Chicago mobster Tony Spilotro’s Hole-in-the-Wall Gang are arrested in a botched burglary attempt in Las Vegas.

Former Teamsters Union President Jimmy Hoffa, who partnered with mobsters, disappears from suburban Detroit. His body is never found.

June 20, 1975

Sam Giancana, former boss of the Chicago Outfit, is killed in his home in Oak Park, Illinois.
