Chicago Mob boss “Big Jim” Colosimo is killed, putting Johnny “The Fox” Torrio and his lieutenant, Al Capone, in charge of Chicago’s Southside Gang.

Prohibition becomes the law of the United States.

Congress passes the Volstead Act, providing legal definitions of alcoholic beverages and establishing penalties for Prohibition violations.

Eight members of the Chicago White Sox conspire with gamblers, possibly including New York Mob boss Arnold Rothstein, to purposely lose the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds.

Congress ratifies the 18th Amendment to the Constitution banning the manufacture, sale or transport of alcohol.
