THE SPEAKEASY

THE SPEAKEASY

Travel back in time to the Prohibition era, when thousands of speakeasies operating in hard-to-find places satisfied the nation’s thirst for forbidden spirits.

Informative and entertaining exhibits, videos and artifacts tell the stories of the Roaring Twenties, which saw the rise of flappers, jazz and the Mob. The speakeasy exhibit is built around a well-stocked bar with a hand-crafted cocktail menu, and weekly live music, creating a lively environment inspired by that bygone age.

National Absinthe Day: Absinthe Frappe | March 5-8 | $14
As the temperance movement began in the late 1800s, Absinthe bore the brunt of the teetotaler’s fight unlike any other spirit. The over proof French liquor had been falsely linked to hallucinations due to its wormwood content and was subsequently banned in Europe in the early 1900s. In America, the licorice spirit was banned from 1912 until 2007 when the FDA and TTB legalized Absinthe sans thujone, the compound found in untreated wormwood. This Absinthe Day, celebrate with the Absinthe Frappe, crafted with Absente Absinthe, Sambuca, simple syrup for sweetness and a pinch of salt for balance.

St. Patrick's Day Cocktail: The County Cork | March 14-17 | $14
By the early 20th century, Americans were already the largest consumers of Irish whiskey, but the U.S.’s decade of Prohibition was nearly the downfall of Ireland’s beloved export. Many Irish distillers were forced to close when America went dry. However, the taste for Irish whiskey never totally evaporated. While celebrating Ireland’s patron saint this St. Patrick’s Day, experience The Underground’s sip inspired by Irish distillers - The County Cork. The cocktail blends Carpano Antica, Dry Curacao, a couple dashes of absinthe and Midleton, County Cork, Ireland’s very own Jameson Irish Whiskey.

EXHIBITS

EXHIBITS

Exhibits in the speakeasy tell the story of the Roaring Twenties, with Flapper dresses, Paul Mare’s trumpet and more.

BEE'S KNEES

The Bee’s Knees was a popular Prohibition-era drink. Its name is an homage to dancer Bee Jackson, who is credited with popularizing the Charleston. Jackson’s exposed knees were the talk of Broadway and beyond. Our twist on the classic cocktail adds jalapeno for a little kick that’s sure to make you dance.

MARLOW

Inspired by a bourbon lover with a soft spot for sherry, this secret twist on a classic marries richness with velvety smooth textures to bring out one sexy sip packed with refreshing no-nonsense and a hint of sass.

MOONSHINE MAYHEM

When Al Capone moved to Miami in the late 1920s, the tropical climate inspired his in-house bartender to invent more exotic drinks. This cocktail boasts a rich palette of flavors, including pineapple, tea and cardamom. When delicate spices meet Mob Museum Moonshine, only Mayhem can result.
