Public Hero No. 1

Public Hero No. 1

1935: J. Walter Ruben director; starring Chester Morris, Lionel Barrymore, Jean Arthur. This potboiler from MGM has Morris (as an undercover FBI agent, the eponymous Public Hero No. 1) going after a Purple Gang crime boss (Public Enemy No. 1). The film is notable for the appearance of Barrymore as an alcoholic doctor who bandages up the gang members when they’re hurt, and Arthur as the conflicted blonde. Also notable for referencing the ultra-violent (but mostly dead or imprisoned, by that time) Purple Gang of Detroit. Remade six years later as The Get-Away.
