Little Caesar

Little Caesar

1931: Mervyn LeRoy, director; starring Edward G. Robinson. This pre-Hayes Code film has a violent gangster moving up through the ranks of an explicitly Italian gang in Chicago. Fun fact: Many, including the writer from whose novel the film was adapted, understood Robinson’s Rico character in the film to be gay.
