Since the house inherently has the advantage in a casino, owning one can be very profitable. But the Mob was not satisfied with the legitimate earnings from its Las Vegas casino interests. Mob bosses devised clever schemes to “skim” a percentage of cash from the casinos before it was officially counted. Couriers quietly carried this unreported and untaxed money to the bosses back East. State regulators eventually caught on to these schemes, but not before tens of millions were smuggled out of Nevada.
