Member Exclusive: Straight Out of L.A.: The California Racketeers Who Built Las Vegas
For years, political corruption allowed the Los Angeles underworld to operate freely, but a reform movement in 1938 cracked down on that city’s illegal gambling kingpins. They decided to try a new venue: Las Vegas. The allure of legalized gambling attracted men who would become synonymous with our city’s casino industry, including Guy McAfee, Tutor Scherer, Farmer Page, Tony Cornero, Marion Hicks, Sam Boyd, Wilbur Clark, Billy Wilkerson and Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. Geoff Schumacher, Vice President of Exhibits and Programs at The Mob Museum, will look back at this pivotal period and explore Las Vegas’ historic and enduring connections to Southern California.
